McGinty's cottage has been the McGinty family home since its construction in 1930 from local stone.

Originally a three room cottage, the family's meals would have been cooked in a huge fireplace in the living room.

The Rural Electrification Scheme brought electricity to the island in 1952 which saw the end of the use of paraffin lamps and candles to light the house.

In the 1960s the large fireplace was bricked up as an extension to the rear created a back kitchen, an addition bedroom and an indoor toilet and bathroom.

In the late 1990s the house was completely refitted and in the late 2000s it was refurbished with new roof and wall insulation, smoke alarms, emergency lighting, a wet room and oil central heating.

Today it is a snug and welcoming home from home for up to six people in 3 double bed bedrooms.

The house sits on half an acre of grass land where rhubarb, blackcurrants and apple trees grow side by side in the shelter of the turf shed.

McGinty's cottage has a beautiful view of the sea and the Currane peninsula across on the mainland and is just a short walk from the main village, Achill Sound, and is an ideal starting point for exploring and experiencing all that Achill Island has to offer.
Currane, across the bay.
